8 Best At-Home Hair Color

When it comes to dying your hair you should always trust the pros. We tapped color gurus Moiz Alladina (who counts Tilda Swinton and Gigi Hadid as clients), Rita Hazan (the wiz behind Beyoncé's signature golden blonde), and Simone Pearl Mangano (an NYC colorist known for giving the platinum touch) to give us insider tips on how to do a DIY job right, along with their favorite at-home kits, here.

Garnier Nutrisse Nourishing Color

For blonde dye, Hazan prefers Garnier Nutrisse. "Always pick an ash or neural tone," she says. "Your hair naturally will pull warmth so this will reduce it a lot, unless you want a warm tone. Then choose something with gold in it."

Clairol Natural Instincts Hair Color

Use "vegetable dye if you want something to richen (darken) your color." Hazan uses Natural Instincts from Clairol for semi-permanent jobs. Since the color eventually washes out, "you don't get roots" that need touch-ups.

Vidal Sassoon Pro Series

"Vidal Sassoon takes a little longer but the color is much more vibrant," Alladina says. Because of its lengthier process, "apply it to your roots and wait 20 minutes [before] you apply the color to the middle and ends." Added bonus: "The conditioner that comes with it leaves hair super shiny."

Garnier Nutrisse Permanent Haircolor

"Apply Vaseline around the hairline so you don't stain your skin," Alladina says. If going darker, he notes that the "ends should always be lighter, so don't apply all-over at once." For redheads, Alladina approves of this Garnier box. "It is rich in color since it has a lightening effect after a few washes."

Bleach London Washing Out Liquid

For dip-dye hair, Mangano loves Bleach London's rainbow of shades. "They even have a product that removes the [dye] so you can change colors."

John Frieda Precision Color Foam

Alladina likes John Frieda for long and thick hair because of its quick application with a foam formula. He suggests applying the mousse to roots for 15 minutes first, then pulling through to the ends for another 10 minutes.

Clairol Nice'n Easy

"Nice'n Easy by Clairol is great for grey coverage," Hazan says. If you're having trouble with instructions (which you should follow to a T), she recommends calling the number on the box for their surprisingly helpful tips.

Clairol Root Touch-Up

"Clairol Root Touch-Up is a reliable standby for when a visit to the salon isn't doable," says Mangano, who suggests using less product so it doesn't get too opaque.
